Unit Manager for the Nature Analysis Unit

We are looking for a Unit Manager who, together with engaged employees, wants to drive and develop the work of the Nature Analysis Unit forward.

The Department for Nature and Wildlife implements policies regarding the management of biodiversity and ecosystems, including work as the national hunting and wildlife authority. Environmental protection thus contributes to a robust and sustainable society and to people's well-being. We develop knowledge bases, information, guidance, and control measures to achieve Swedish and international goals, and we monitor the effects. The department allocates government funds for the protection and management of valuable nature and wildlife management and represents the state as a property owner in protected areas. Our operations are based on broad collaboration with authorities, research, industry, landowners, civil society, and international actors.

The Nature Analysis Unit works for ecologically sustainable use of natural resources and strengthens biodiversity across the landscape. The unit analyzes environmental conditions and manages Sweden's reporting of international commitments within the EU and UN. The unit develops socio-economic analyses for effective control measures, is responsible for the agency's work with the scientific council for biodiversity and the international panel for biodiversity, and is currently designing operations around increased cooperation with the business sector on biodiversity.

Your Responsibilities

As a unit manager, you will work on behalf of the department head to lead, develop, and follow up on the work of the unit. You will be part of the department's management team, where you contribute to the overall goals of the department and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. You will have overall responsibility for processes, results, staffing, as well as the unit's finances and agreements with partners and contractors.

The unit manager has personnel and work environment responsibility for the unit's employees and ensures that the unit has the necessary competence to fulfill its mission and has the ability to create clarity and direction in the work. In your role, you will harness employee engagement and ensure they have the right conditions to perform their work. You will contribute to a good working climate, participation, and good collaboration both internally and externally, as well as quality assure the unit's deliveries and represent the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency in external contexts.

Your Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Academic degree in a relevant field, such as natural sciences, environmental sciences, engineering, geography, urban planning, environmental economics, or equivalent education deemed relevant by the employer.
  • Several years of experience in management with personnel or operational responsibility, or another leading role that is assessed to correspond to this experience.
  • Experience working in the fields of nature, environment, or biodiversity and Swedish governmental collaboration in this area.
  • Experience leading development work in a knowledge or expertise-intensive organization.
  • Good experience of collaboration, both internally and with external actors.
  • Very good understanding of public operations, the state’s core values, and government governance, preferably with experience from a government agency.
  • Very good ability to express yourself verbally and in writing in Swedish, as well as good ability to communicate in English.

Meritorious:

  • Experience in the unit's work or competence areas, i.e., agriculture, landscape perspective, reporting, environmental goal follow-up, analysis of measures and control measures, or social economics.
  • Experience from policy-relevant operations at the national level.
  • Experience from international cooperation, for example within the EU or UN.

About the Employment

The position is a permanent full-time employment with a six-month probationary period. Placement in Stockholm or Östersund, with immediate start according to agreement. Individual salary setting applies, and the position may involve travel, primarily within Sweden but also internationally.
